Selfridges Birmingham filled the catwalk of Birmingham’s biggest fashion and shopping event, Style Birmingham Live Autumn / Winter 2012, with a host of collections new in at Selfridges this season from the most desirable brands.

The final scene of Style Live 2012 saw Selfridges Birmingham exhibit the latest and greatest trends from major designers including Peter Pilotto, Lanvin, Issa, Herve Leger, Victoria Beckham, Isabel Marant, Alexander McQueen and Tiger of Sweden.

Dee Sarai General Manager at Selfridges says, “As this was the first year Selfridges has taken an official role in Style Live, we were thrilled to host a sensational finale at a buzzing event in Birmingham’s city centre. The collections featured gave guests a fabulous preview as to what Selfridges has to offer this season from some of the most inspirational designers in the industry. Overall it was a fantastic day!”

Alexander McQueen’s latest pieces bring with it shapes that almost explode, adding drama with colours which emerge from pure white, transforming into deep reds. Sarah Burton explores size and exaggeration with dresses progressing from close-to-the-body cuts to bursting, flower-like skirts.

Herve Leger brings a darker side to Autumn / Winter 2012 with optical prints and earthy tones as the Azria design duo builds upon the famed bandage dress. The collection sees mythical influences and an equestrienne edge mixed with intricate detailing, including python stamped black leather with swaths of black fur.

Joining the Eastern influence of the designerwear offering is Peter Pilotto. This collection features stunning prints inspired by Japanese “light trucks” and Chinese opera masks, which are adapted to create a three-dimensional feel to the pieces. Fish-tails and folds add intricate structure to pencil skirts, whilst the season’s favoured puffer jacket readies Selfridges’ customers for the colder climate.

Alber Elvaz commemorates his decade at Lanvin with a celebration of the female form in this sumptuous collection. Jewel-coloured peplums, delicate lace finishes and decadent fur trims mark Lanvin as the party collection of the Autumn / Winter 2012 season. The popular micro-trend of long leather gloves adds a finishing touch to this indulgent evening wear.

Known for her clean tailoring and beautiful silhouettes, Victoria Beckham’s new collection, available at Selfridges Birmingham, adds ribbing, quilting and tougher construction which nips the figure in at the waist. Expect to see sportier pieces but with Beckham’s signature silhouette maintained throughout an overall elegant collection.

'A Man's Story' - DVD Film Review

Every dream has a price…

People, I can’t lie to you and say that the two films I saw on Friday were worth reviewing but what I can say is that one of them had more action than I’ve seen in a Martial Arts action movie. It’s problem? It had too much! I had to watch it with my friend Brett through fingers covering my eyes while holding a bucket in case I was physically sick!

It was a great jaw dropping film and the finale where the baddie fights two of the goodies. Truly amazing and excellently choreographed, but because it was so gory, I’ve decided instead to tell you about a recently released DVD that totally blew me away!

Wanna know what it was? Come closer and read on….

When it comes to fashion, those who know me would describe me and my fashion sense as (and I quote) “a living tramp” and “best dressed dog clothes 1991”. But I digress.

Oswald Boateng is a Black British tailor that has just released a fly-on-the-wall documentary about a 12 year period of his life from 1998 to the present day. That statement doesn’t tell you much about the film because during this period of time, Oswald goes through everything bar death and comes through to become what he is, “the coolest, sharpest dressed man on the planet” (and that does include David Beckham).

The film starts off with him receiving a call from his wife stating that she regrets the day she ever met him (this is the family friendly version). Her words obviously affect him emotionally and on several occasions you see him crying or upset.

Other things you need to know about him is that at 28, he was the youngest and first tailor of African descent (Mr. Andrew Ramroop OBE from Trinidad & Tobago was the 1st person of colour being of Indo-Caribbean descent) on Savile Row which is an amazing achievement.

The film also shows you Oswald travelling to Paris to do a fashion show and the organiser refusing to continue without being paid. This is a very candid and open film that showed that he was an open and candid person.

Also during this 12 year period he suffers bankruptcies, divorces, organises a fashion show in Ghana commemorating the Anniversary of the ‘Abolition of the Transportation of Slaves’, receives an OBE, dresses his friends Will Smith, Laurence Fishburne, Chris Rock etc for the Oscar ceremony and becomes head of design at Givenchy!

I can’t write all the achievements that the film shows Oswald accomplishing, however I can point you in the direction of getting the information yourself, Amazon or A great film about a truly stylish man who to be honest, looks amazing wearing his own outfits. The only other designer who comes close to looking as good is Tom Ford.

Next week’s reviews will feature the films featured at the @ID_fest based at Derby Quad where I will be interviewing on the opening day the original ‘Get Carter’ director Mike Hodges about his life and career.

Today Friday 25th May is day two of the @ID_fest and that’s an evening with the local actor Paddy Considine who starred in “Dead Man’s Shoes’ a few years ago.

Tickets are still available for the 26th May at 4:00pm which features a film called “We Are Poets” this is a documentary about a group of young poets from Leeds that go to an American poetry slam competition “Brave New Voices” as UK representatives.

The film is being presented at @ID_Fest by Sheffield Doc/ Fest, another UK film festival that Derby QUAD work closely with to showcase great films around the country.

Two times Oscar nominee Eve Stewart will be holding a ‘Production Design workshop’ presented by BAFTA. ‘Mastering Your Craft’: Production Design with Eve Stewart’ takes place on Sunday 27th May at 2:00pm. So here it is Kgnston ft. Beenie Man with the new video ‘5 Cent’

Kgnston (Jacqui Edwards) from Kingston Jamaica is a graduate from Berkeley College New York where she still resides as a successful model with a true love of music.

I interviewed Kgnston at Caribbean Fashion Week in Jamaica last June, she filled me in on one of her projects with Beenie Man which was the creation of an uplifting party track called ‘5 Cent’ and now she has released her first video so she can “Spread the vibe”.

Kgnston told Beenie she wanted something different for this project, and she also recalled how this future hit was recorded within just 20 minutes. ‘5 Cent’ has a fresh island sound with a soul influence - Kgnston’s vocals are playful and fun alongside the “King of the Dancehall” Beenie Man, creating that perfect party vibe!

This season will celebrate the London Fashion Week debut of the Caribbean Collections exhibition, showcasing a selection of exceptional handpicked designers from fifteen islands across the Caribbean. The exhibition will feature collections from designers who have been influenced by a mixture of African, British, French and Spanish cultures and will culminate in a private dinner with leading Caribbean Supermodels Jeneil Williams and Jaunel McKenzie.

The exhibition honours some of the Caribbean’s most exceptional designers who have made great contributions to the fashion world. The diverse range of designs includes the classic cuts of Drenna Luna and Julan (Jamaica) to the avant-garde style of Posh Punk (Barbados) and the resort appeal of KAJ (Trinidad and Tobago).

Caribbean Collections also highlights designers who paved the way during the evolution of a regional design aesthetic including Meiling (Trinidad and Tobago) and Jenny Polanco (Dominican Republic). Jewellery from Peace-Is of Bianca (Jamaica) and handbags from Veve (Haiti) complete the showrooms collection.

2012 marks a significant year in Caribbean history as Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago celebrate their Golden Jubilee, marking 50 years of Independence. Caribbean Collections is proudly set against a rich backdrop of the region’s ancestry and culture.

Chairman of the Caribbean Fashion Industry Association,** Kingsley Cooper** said, “This exhibition is really about showing the fashion industry that we have design talent to compete in a global arena. The contribution which the islands can make to fashion has gone under the world’s fashion radar for too long. We are delighted to be a part of London Fashion Week and as organisers of Caribbean Fashion week, we see this as a big step for Caribbean fashion, as we continue to develop our industry and position our designers to take their place on the world stage – our time is now.”

The Caribbean Collections exhibition is endorsed by some of the world’s most beautiful women, all hailing from the islands. Jeneil Williams who followed Kate Moss on the cover of LOVE and I-D magazines, adorned the cover of Italian Vogue and has fronted campaigns for Vivienne Westwood, Lanvin and Louis Vuitton, will join former Victoria Secrets model Nell Robinson and her fellow Jamaican supermodel and American Vogue favourite Jaunel McKenzie in supporting the collection.

The fashion showcase will take place at the Cosmopolitan Charing Cross Hotel’s Regency suite on 17th-18th February 2012, from 10am to 5pm.
